Sulfanilic Acid from Aniline: The Hottest New Reaction in Chemistry in 1883
Welcome back to Wheeler Scientific! In today's video, we're diving into the fascinating world of sulfanilic acid synthesis. Previously, we synthesized aniline from nitrobenzene, which was derived from benzene, which is made from benzoic acid produced from toluene. Quite the journey, isn't it? Let’s transform that aniline into sulfanilic acid, a crucial compound used in azo dyes, pharmaceuticals, and analytical chemistry.

I Tried to do Chemistry with LEGO Bricks

Legos have always fascinated me, these prismatic building blocks were the gateway to expressing my creativity and most likely yours too, over a trillion of these blocks have been made over the the past 60 years. People not only play with these blocks, but the blocks play an important role in shaping interest, such as mine, they had a part in me becoming a chemist. Legos have a lot in common wit...

Aniline Synthesis via Tin Reduction (Science Explained)
Переглядів 84621 день тому
Welcome back, chemistry enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into a classic reaction in organic chemistry: the synthesis of aniline from nitrobenzene. In a previous video we produced nitrobenzene from benzene which was produced from benzoic acid made from toluene. Nitrobenzene is our starting point-a yellow, aromatic compound that's notorious for its toxicity but incredibly useful in synthesis. We'...
How To Make Furfural from a Corn Cob
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Місяць тому
It's corn! Corn is a staple of our diet and has been for hundreds of years. It is the second most grown crop, loved by many, and most likely, you will eat a corn product today. After the corn kernels are taken off the cob, we are left with a pile of seemingly useless corn cobs, or are they? It may seem impossible, but we can do chemistry with these discarded cobs and get a pretty fascinating co...
Extracting the World's Most Popular Psychoactive: Caffeine

Cocaine and methamphetamine are well-known psychoactive drugs, but today, we will be extracting the world's most popular psychoactive drug, caffeine, from tea leaves, and we will see how pure we can get it. Like many other people, caffeine is my favorite drug. People enjoy caffeine mainly because of its stimulant properties and how it inhibits the chemical responsible for sleepiness called aden...
Why The Chemistry of Fight Club is Wrong (And Right)
Переглядів 179 тис.3 місяці тому
Technically, chemistry is the study of matter, but I prefer to see it as the study of change. It is growth, then decay, then transformation. It is fascinating, really. Chemistry is at the center of the movie Fight Club: the chemistry of a man and society, the chemistry between a man and woman, but most importantly, the chemistry of chemicals. How accurate is the chemistry of Fight Club? Can you...
Doing Chemistry with a Styrofoam Box

Styrene is a chemical that is around us all the time. Let's make some from a shipping box. I recently got some chemicals in the mail, and they came in this styrofoam box to keep them cold during transport. I know it's styrofoam due to the PS and number 6. This says that it's polystyrene, a polymer of styrene. Styrene is one of those compounds that is well known but not at the same time. It is u...
Nitrobenzene Production, Mistakes to Avoid and Analysis

In a previous video, we produced toxic benzene. Now it's time to build off that toxic starting point and make another toxic chemical, but it's a better-smelling one. Nitrobenzene is best known as the chemical that gets hydrogenated to aniline. It can be made into other chemicals and serve different purposes, such as fragrances and as a solvent, but these are outshined by the use of producing an...

Very interesting and highly professionally done and well explained! Btw: why do you first dissolve the liquid samples in ether just to drive it off again before running the GC?

    • @WheelerScientific

Thanks! it serves two purposes: 1. It dilutes the sample, it only takes a very small amount of sample to analyze. If too much was to be put in the detector could become damaged. 2. It carries it through the instrument to the Gas-Chromatography column where the separation occurs. lmk if you have any other questions!

Thanks for explaining. Why did you choose a copolymer instead of pure polystyrene? There are plenty of examples about cracking PS to the monomer, would be interesting to know how pure the resulting product is. Maybe also highly contaminated with toluene, ethylbenzene etc? Or is this specific to ABS?

@@WheelerScientific oh, just gotten burned a few times trying to add something "dropwise" from a thing not built to be able to dispense drops. A smidge bigger pour than you figured can result in excitement when you weren't planning to have any. The "pressure equalizing" part is so you don't have to have an opening somewhere else in the system where you might not want one. A sep funnel can be an addition funnel in a pinch, but that's inviting unplanned excitement in a lot of setups.

Nice synthesis! Just a few points on the chemistry: nitro groups on aromatic rings are mildly inductively electron withdrawing but strongly mesomerically withdrawing, and while amine groups are mesomerically activating at the ortho and para positions, protonation to form the ammonium, as occurs in sulfuric acid, leads to a strongly deactivating and inductively electron withdrawing group, which would generally favour meta substitution.

Nice video and idea, thanks. (Maybe you should mention in the video the danger of lead fumes). As you know about these things. A question if you don't mind. I'm IT, I'm not really versed in physics. Recently I got a budget geiger counter end thought of getting some weak radioactive sources to toy with it. These would be: A small glass with uranium and one of those negative ion pendant (thorium salts I think). Can you give some advice, or tell where should I look for it, regardin the storage and eventual disposal.of such samples? I've seen many videos of people who own uranium glass ware and have them in the living room, but I want to be sure before getting anything like that.
